The only problem with the drive is these errors in the System log. SAS-SCSI-FC instance of the drive, as that doesn't exist on my Win 7 machine where the error has never occurred. And I may be grasping here, but I wonder if SeaTools on Win10 seeing two instances of the disk might provide a clue? Maybe these instances are in conflict somehow? Or maybe the error is generated by the So I am thinking there may be a bad match up here between these drives and Win 10 in some way. Of those, 2 of them specifically mention Backup Plus drives AND Windows 10. In searching the web for "event ID 154", I only find 5 direct hits - 2 of them refer to a Microsoft article about FC (not relevant), and the other 3 involve Seagate drives.

I have used Device Manager to remove the drivers for the device and rebooted to allow new drivers to be installed - it always comes back to the Microsoft USB driver dated in 2006. I have tried various USB 3.x ports for the data, and various ports for the power - the errors occur wherever I plug it in. It doesn't matter whether I use the power connector - the errors occurs with or without it. The drive has 2 USB connectors, one for data and the other for supplemental power. On Windows 7, SeaTools shows two categories, "SATA-PATA" and "USB-1394", and the BUP drive is only see under the USB heading. It passes the Fix All Long test when run on each of those. Running SeaTools on Win 10, the drive appears twice, once under SAS-SCSI-FC as "Seagate BUP FastHDD" and again under USB-1394 as "BUP FastHDD". I have never seen this on the Win 7 machine, but once it starts, it is persistent until the drive is ejected on Win 10, generating as many as 20 messages per second and thereby rendering my System log useless for anything else. The IO operation at logical block address 0x0 for Disk 3 (PDO name: \Device\0000005d) failed due to a hardware error. When using the same drive on the Win 10 PC, after some time (could be 12+ hours!), I start getting Event ID 154 errors in my System log: After initial setup of new the PC, I updated the BIOS, then installed all available Windows updates and driver updates from Dell.
